Mississippi Financial Literacy Legislation & Educational Stats

The U.S. Department of Education’s Common Core of Data division of the National Center for Education Statistics shows that Mississippi has about half the total number of students as the national average (490,917 as opposed to 986,521). Mississippi features 1,079 total schools (1,971 national average) and 32,311 teachers (61,418 national average). The student/teacher ratio in the Magnolia State is 15.19 (16.06 average).

House Bill 747 was legislation proposed in 2015 that would have authorized local school districts to implement financial literacy curriculum for students in grades 9 through 12. In developing the curriculum, school boards could review national programs and solicit free literature from nationally-recognized programs. Unfortunately, this bill died in committee.
